Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer-identified (LGBTQ) individuals deserve equal respect and treatment within the UNC community, and they contribute an essential element to the diversity of the UNC community, enriching the intellectual and social life of the entire University. The UNC Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) Office opened its doors full-time in spring of 2003. The office’s creation is a result of many years of active work on the part of students, staff, and faculty who saw the need for a more centralized and visible space to serve the needs of LGBT students and issues related to sexual orientation and gender identity.

By creating dialogues between heterosexual and LGBTQ communities; networking with campus and community progressive organizations; building an affirming LGBTQ social environment; and advocating for the civil rights of all people, we create a community of LGBTQ folks and their allies that supports and affirms all aspects of their identities.
