2. Anna Rüling
Anna Rueling is the first known Lesbian activist. This site offers a review of a speech she gave over 100 years ago (1904), and offers links to her speech in English and Italian, In her speech, Rüling brought Gay rights and women's rights under one umbrella. She congratulated the Committee for its support of women's rights and for including Lesbians in its fight for equal right.
Comic strips and graphic books have only recently been acknowledged as a serious art form, but in both mainstream and underground culture, they have served for decades as a powerful tool of satire and humor; and in their representation of glbtq people, they also serve as a barometer of shifting attitudes toward gay subcultures.

The Stonewall riots should not be seen as the only shaping force in the development of contemporary gay male photography, but it makes a convenient dividing line. Put simply, Stonewall contributed to the sexual revolution and the sexual revolution contributed to the development and visibility of a gay male subculture that in turn contributed to gay male photography.
